Laser Cutting ABS Sheet
Product Introduction: Laser Cutting ABS Sheet

Our high-precision laser cutting service for ABS sheets delivers clean, burr-free edges with minimal heat‑affected zones. Ideal for rapid prototyping and mass production, the process ensures intricate designs, tight tolerances, and repeatable quality. Whether you need custom enclosures, automotive parts, or signage, laser‑cut ABS offers excellent dimensional stability and a smooth finish – ready for assembly or surface decoration.

Performance of ABS Sheet

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) sheets combine impact resistance, toughness, and heat resistance. Key properties include:

  • High mechanical strength – withstands heavy loads without cracking.
  • Good chemical resistance – resists oils, greases, and diluted acids.
  • Low moisture absorption – maintains dimensional stability in humid environments.
  • Smooth surface – ideal for painting, gluing, or hot stamping.
  • Flame retardant grades available (UL94 V‑0 or V‑2).
  • Working temperature – typically -20°C to +80°C.

Applications of Laser Engraving

Laser engraving is used across industries for permanent, high‑contrast markings:

  • Industrial manufacturing – serial numbers, barcodes, logos on tools and machine parts.
  • Personalised gifts – photo engraving on wood, acrylic, metal tags.
  • Electronics – keypad markings, PCB labels, device housings.
  • Medical devices – UDI codes on surgical instruments (using fiber lasers for metals).
  • Signage & displays – precise cut‑out letters, illuminated signs.
  • Packaging – date codes, lot numbers on cardboard or plastic films.
  • Textile & leather – engraving patterns on denim, felt, or artificial leather.

FAQ

Q1: Can I laser cut ABS sheet with a diode laser?

A: Thin ABS (≤1 mm) may be cut with high‑power diode lasers (e.g., 10 W output), but edges will be less clean. CO₂ lasers are strongly preferred for production work.

Q2: Does ABS produce toxic fumes when laser cut?

A: Yes. ABS releases hydrogen cyanide (HCN), styrene, and other VOCs. Always operate in a well‑ventilated enclosure with active carbon filtration and external exhaust.

Q3: How to avoid yellowing or melting of ABS edges?

A: Use high speed, low power, multiple passes, and strong air assist. Pre‑test on scrap material to find the sweet spot for your laser.

Q4: What thickness of ABS can a 40 W CO₂ laser cut?

A: Typically up to 3–4 mm cleanly. Thicker sheets require higher power (≥80 W) or multiple slow passes, which increase charring.

Q5: Can I engrave ABS without leaving a sticky residue?

A: Yes. Use low power (10–20%) and medium speed (400–600 mm/s). Clean the engraved area with isopropyl alcohol after engraving to remove any tacky deposits.

Q6: Is laser‑cut ABS food‑safe?

A: No. Standard ABS is not approved for direct food contact. Use food‑grade polypropylene or PETG instead.

Q7: What is the difference between engraving and cutting ABS?

A: Engraving removes surface layers (0.1–0.3 mm deep) with high speed/low power; cutting goes through the full thickness with low speed/higher power and multiple passes.

Factor Laser Cutting CNC Routing
Edge quality Smooth, slightly melted edge; may need deburring Machined finish; can have tool marks
Minimum kerf 0.1–0.2 mm 0.5–1.5 mm (depends on tool diameter)
Speed (thin sheet ≤2 mm) Very fast (up to 50 mm/s for 40 W) Slower (5–15 mm/s)
Tool wear No contact, no tool wear Router bits dull quickly on ABS
Fixturing Simple – magnets or pins Requires vacuum table or clamps
Setup cost Low (no tooling) Moderate (tooling and collets)
Material thickness limit Up to ~8 mm with 150 W laser Unlimited (with proper spindle power)
Fume hazard High – needs extraction Moderate – dust extraction only

Recommendation: For thin ABS (<5 mm), intricate shapes, or high‑volume runs, laser cutting is faster and more cost‑effective. For thick plates (>8 mm) or parts requiring perfectly square edges without any melting, CNC routing is preferred.
