How to Thermoform ABS Sheet: A Complete Guide for Manufacturers

Mar 03, 2025 Leave a message

1. What is ABS sheet? Why choose ABS for thermoforming?

ABS material properties:

ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer) is a high-strength, impact-resistant, easy-to-process thermoplastic widely used in automotive, electronics, home appliances and other industries. Its excellent heat resistance (80-100°C) and surface finish make it ideal for thermoforming.

ABS sheet advantages:

  • High dimensional stability, reducing the risk of processing deformation
  • Good chemical resistance, suitable for complex environments.
  • Can be plated, painted or printed for added value.

As an ABS sheet manufacturer, we offer custom thickness (0.8mm-15mm) and colour to meet diversified needs.

2. ABS vacuum forming process in detail

Step 1: Mould design and preparation

Mould material selection:
Aluminium mould (high-precision mass production), resin mould (quick sampling), wood mould (low-cost trial production).

Design points:

De-moulding slope ≥3°, to avoid the finished product jamming, our vacuum forming service provides free mould consultation as well as mould customization, to optimize your production cost.

Step 2: ABS sheet heating and softening

Temperature control:
Heating zone setting: 120-160°C (adjusted according to the thickness of the sheet)

Uniform heating until the sheet is soft and mouldable, avoiding local overheating and scorching.

The use of high quality ABS sheet can reduce heating defects, and our products are ISO 9001 certified to ensure processing stability.

Step 3: Vacuum moulding

Cover the mould with the softened sheet and start the vacuum pump (pressure Forming ≥ 0.8MPa).

Remove the mould after cooling and trim the edge burrs.

Tips: Thin plates (<5mm) are recommended to use single-station vacuum moulding machine, thick plates (>8mm) are recommended to use pressure-assisted moulding to improve accuracy. We have vacuum forming co-operative manufacturers who can provide you with vacuum forming machines at favourable prices.

Step 4: Post-treatment and quality inspection

Surface treatment: sanding, UV coating, screen printing, etc.

Strictly check the size tolerance (±0.5mm) and no bubbles/cracks on the surface.

3. Vacuum moulding processing common problems and solutions

Sheet wrinkling → uneven heating or insufficient vacuum pressure → Use our high precision temperature controlled ABS sheet, or upgrade the vacuum system.

Surface orange peel → Mould temperature is too low → Suggest to pre-heat the mould to 60-80°C.

Difficulty in mould release → Insufficient release slope → Our engineer team can provide mould optimization solutions.
