Introduction--Transparent PMMA/ABS Sheet
We stock PMMA sheets in several varieties like crystal-clear, opal white, matt, tinted, mirrored, fluorescent and more. These sheets have a wide application range due to their strength, workability and choice of colours and finishes. PMMA sheets are an outstanding material for DIY projects. Special equipment is not required; basic DIY tools will do the job. With quality tools it's possible to accomplish any sawing, cutting, milling, drilling and matting. PMMA's most important attribute is its transparency. PMMA sheets are 92% transparent, this is much higher than regular glass. The combination of the high transparency with PMMA's ability to filter UV light makes it the perfect choice for windows. Our PMMA sheets are available in a thickness ranging from 2 to 30 millimetres.

What are the Features of PMMA?
Transmittance
PMMA (Acrylic) polymer has a Refractive Index of 1.49. Hence it offers high light transmittance. PMMA grades allow 92% of light to pass through it, which is more than glass or other plastics. These plastic materials can easily be thermoformed without any loss in optical clarity. As compared to polystyrene and polyethylene, PMMA is recommended for most outdoor applications thanks to its environmental stability.
Surface Hardness
PMMA is a tough, durable and lightweight thermoplastic. The density of acrylic ranges between 1.17-1.20 g/cm3 which is half less than that of glass. It has excellent scratch resistance when compared to other transparent polymers like Polycarbonate, but less than glass. It exhibits low moisture and water-absorbing capacity, due to which products made have good dimensional stability.
UV Stability
PMMA has high resistance to UV light and weathering. Most commercial acrylic polymers are UV stabilized for good resistance to prolonged exposure to sunlight as their mechanical and optical properties fairly vary under these conditions, Hence, PMMA is suitable for outdoor applications intended for long-term open-air exposure.
Chemical Resistance
Acrylics are unaffected by aqueous solutions of most laboratory chemicals. For example, detergents, cleaners, dilute inorganic acids, alkalis, and aliphatic hydrocarbons. However, acrylics are NOT recommended for use with chlorinated or aromatic hydrocarbons, esters, or ketones.
How is Acrylic (PMMA) Used?
It is a transparent thermoplastic homopolymer usually sold under the brand name "plexiglass." Similar to polycarbonate, the material can be used as a safer alternative to glass in situations where impact resistance is essential but PC's high impact strength is unnecessary.
Modern and traditional uses of acrylic take advantage of the material's inherent transparency and the impact resilience of some varieties. Lenses, acrylic nails, paint, security barriers, medical gadgets, LCD panels, and furniture are all common applications. Since it is so transparent, it is frequently used as display case windows, aquariums, and other enclosures.
The raw material permits the internal transmission of light at approximately the same capacity as glass, making it a superb substitute, even though it is made commercially available in a variety of hues (sometimes translucent and perhaps not). It is comparable to polycarbonate in almost every way. Polycarbonate often has greater impact strength, while acrylic does not contain the possibly dangerous ingredient bisphenol-A (BPA).
Acrylic is accessible and cheap. When the need for a strong material is not paramount, this is a viable alternative to polycarbonate. When you want the scratch resistance of acrylic but the impact strength of polycarbonate (PC), you can laminate the two together. Bulletproof "glass" is manufactured in this fashion. While the PC acts as a bulletproof barrier, the acrylic exterior protects against scratches.
Key Applications of Transparent PMMA/ABS Sheet
Architecture and Construction
Thanks to its excellent impact and UV resistance, PMMA is widely used in window and door profiles, canopies, panels, façade design, etc. It also facilitates light transmission and provides good heat insulation, hence a suitable choice of building green houses. PMMA is also used to build aquariums and marine centers.
Lighting
PMMA sheets are used for designing LED lights where it helps maximize light emitting potential. It is also used for construction of lamps thanks to its transparency and optical properties.
Automotive and Transportation
In vehicles, PMMA sheets are used in car windows, motorcycle windshields, interior and exterior panels, fenders, etc. Also colored acrylic sheets are used in car indicator light covers, interior light covers, etc. It is also used for windows of a ship (Salt resistance) and aviation purposes. PMMA also open new design possibilities for car manufacturers thanks to its pleasant acoustic properties, outstanding formability and excellent surface hardness.
Electronics
Due to its excellent optical clarity, high light transmission and scratch resistance, PMMA is widely used in LCD/LED tv screens, laptops, smartphones display as well as electronic equipment displays. PMMA also finds used in solar panels as cover materials thanks to its excellent UV resistance and excellent light transmission allowing high energy conversion efficiencies.
Medical and Healthcare
PMMA is a high purity and easy-to-clean material and hence used to fabricate incubators, drug testing devices, storage cabinets in hospitals and research labs. Also, due to its high bio-compatibility, PMMA is also applied as dental cavity fillings and bone cement.
Furniture
PMMA offers exception properties such as transparency, toughness and aesthetics to produce chairs, tables, kitchen cabinets, bowls, table mats, etc. in any shape, color or finishes.
What Should Be Taken Into Account In Deciding On The Thickness Of Plexiglass?
- Plastic is not as rigid as glass and therefore its strength cannot be compared with that of glass.
- Thin sheets (for example, 2 mm PMMA) are typically used as protective covers for pictures and posters. Thin materials may crack during drilling. Thin PMMA typically needs support around it.
- Thin PC plastic sheets are more durable than PMMA but lack rigidity. The rule of thumb is that larger the piece, the thicker it has to be.
- For example, with terrace glazing, the sheet has to be 5 mm thick or thicker if its height is close to two metres and height is close to a metre. Thinner sheets can be used for smaller areas.
- For work machine glazing, 6-12 mm thick PC is used, preferably with hard coating.
