Introduction
Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene, commonly known as ABS, is a cornerstone of the plastics industry. Celebrated for its remarkable toughness, excellent impact resistance, and good machinability, it is the go-to material for a vast array of products, from protective helmets and automotive trim to consumer electronics and toys. Its ease of processing via injection molding, extrusion, and thermoforming makes it a favorite among manufacturers and fabricators alike.
Despite its widespread utility, standard ABS possesses a significant Achilles' heel: a relatively low heat resistance. Its Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT) typically falls between 85°C and 95°C. When exposed to temperatures approaching or exceeding this range, standard ABS parts can soften, warp, and lose their structural integrity. This thermal limitation restricts its use in applications where elevated temperatures are a constant factor.
What is High-Temperature ABS?
High-Temperature ABS (HT-ABS) is a specialized grade of ABS engineered specifically to overcome thermal limitations. Through advanced formulation-such as modifying the ratio of its base polymers, incorporating heat-resistant additives, or creating alloys with other high-performance plastics-HT-ABS achieves a significantly elevated Heat Deflection Temperature, often ranging from 100°C to 120°C or higher.
HT-ABS vs. Standard ABS
The core difference lies in thermal performance. While standard ABS may begin to deform at temperatures around 90°C, HT-ABS remains dimensionally stable, allowing it to function reliably in much hotter environments. In terms of mechanical properties, HT-ABS retains the excellent impact strength and rigidity of standard ABS, though it can be slightly less ductile. Furthermore, its processability is similar but may require slightly higher processing temperatures due to its elevated melting point.

The Key Advantages of Using High-Temperature ABS Sheet
Superior Thermal Stability and Structural Integrity
The foremost advantage is its exceptional ability to withstand elevated temperatures without deforming. Unlike standard ABS, HT-ABS maintains its shape, rigidity, and mechanical strength under continuous thermal stress, ensuring reliable performance in hot environments.
Enhanced Product Longevity and Reliability
This resistance to heat-induced warping or softening directly translates to longer product lifespans and reduced failure rates. Components made from HT-ABS offer enhanced durability and dependable operation, which lowers the need for maintenance and replacement.
Retention of Inherent ABS Benefits
HT-ABS successfully inherits all the desirable properties of standard ABS. It retains excellent impact toughness, a high strength-to-weight ratio, and a superior surface finish that is ideal for subsequent painting, electroplating, or adhesive bonding.
Excellent Machinability and Processing Versatility
Despite its upgraded thermal performance, HT-ABS remains highly workable. It can be easily machined, cut, drilled, and thermoformed using standard equipment and techniques, making it a versatile and practical choice for both prototyping and full-scale production.
| Feature | Standard ABS | High-Temperature ABS |
|---|---|---|
| Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT) | Typically around 85°C - 95°C (185°F - 203°F) at 1.82 MPa. | Significantly higher, typically in the range of 100°C - 120°C (212°F - 248°F), with some grades exceeding this. |
| Continuous Service Temperature | Up to approximately 60°C - 70°C (140°F - 158°F). | Can often operate continuously at 85°C - 100°C (185°F - 212°F) without significant degradation. |
| Impact Strength | Excellent impact resistance and toughness. | Slightly reduced compared to standard ABS, but still very good. The focus on heat resistance can marginally affect ductility. |
| Stiffness & Strength | Good mechanical strength and rigidity. | Generally maintains similar or slightly improved stiffness at room temperature, with superior strength retention at elevated temperatures. |
| Processability | Easy to extrude, injection mold, and thermoform. | Can be slightly more challenging to process due to its higher melting point and may require adjusted machine settings. |
| Cost | Low cost, one of the most economical engineering plastics. | Moderately higher cost due to specialized formulation. |
