What Is High Impact ABS Sheet?

ABS resin is a terpolymer of acrylonitrile (A), butadiene (B), and styrene (S). It combines the chemical resistance of acrylonitrile, the toughness of butadiene, and the processing flow of styrene. High impact ABS sheet is a sheet-grade specialty material developed by adjusting the rubber phase content and grafting process on the basis of general-purpose ABS. Sheet-grade high impact ABS offers higher impact strength, lower melt flow rate, and excellent thermal extensibility, making it especially suitable for calendering and sheet extrusion.

Core Performance Data

Using industry-leading products as reference, the key mechanical properties of high impact ABS sheet are as follows: notched impact strength up to 370 J/m, tensile strength approximately 34.9–37 MPa, elastic modulus around 2.0 GPa, elongation at break 13%, and flexural strength 72 MPa. In terms of low-temperature toughness, high-performance grades can still maintain 10 kJ/m² notched impact strength at -30°C, and some PC-modified grades can achieve 100% ductile fracture at -30°C.

Low-Temperature Performance

Shooting targets used outdoors face low-temperature challenges. Studies show that standard ABS sheet at -40°C can lose up to 54.2% of its room-temperature notched impact strength, undergoing a ductile-brittle transition. High impact ABS, however, optimizes the particle size distribution and grafting ratio of the polybutadiene phase, maintaining effective energy dissipation at -30°C or even lower. This significantly reduces the risk of target plate fracture during winter outdoor training.

Engraving Performance

Shooting targets often require target rings, brand logos, scale marks, or special patterns. ABS sheet performs well in laser engraving - experiments confirm that ABS can be laser-engraved, and in two-color engraving stock it can produce clear color contrast.

Engraving advantages of high impact ABS: Although high impact grades contain more rubber phase, the rigidity and surface hardness of the SAN matrix (Rockwell R hardness approximately 99–100) are sufficient to support fine engraving. Engraved lines have clean edges and do not become blurred by elastic recovery of the rubber phase.

2.Paint Adhesion

ABS plastic has relatively low surface tension (less than 100 mN/cm) and low surface polarity. Direct painting often leads to poor adhesion, loss of gloss, pitting, and other defects. Shooting target faces need high-contrast target ring colors (black/white/red/orange) and must be weather-resistant and wear-resistant, placing high demands on the coating process.

Solution: Before painting, high impact ABS sheet requires standardized pretreatment - degrease → rinse → activate → dry (70–75°C, 15 min). Activation converts the hydrophobic surface into a hydrophilic surface, significantly improving paint wetting and adhesion. For coating selection, acrylic paint has naturally excellent adhesion to ABS and is the safest choice. Baking temperature must be kept below 70°C to avoid sheet deformation.

3. Vacuum Forming Performance

This is the most important processing advantage of high impact ABS sheet over standard ABS sheet. The suitable vacuum forming temperature range for ABS is 88°C–120°C. Within this range, the sheet softens and conforms to the mold under vacuum negative pressure or air pressure.

Vacuum forming advantages of high impact ABS:

Excellent thermal extensibility: The molecular structure of sheet-grade ABS is designed for uniform extension after softening, making it suitable for curved target faces, recessed impact zones, or 3D dimensional target shapes.

Toughness retained after forming: Vacuum forming does not destroy the rubber phase distribution, so the formed target face still maintains high impact resistance.

Low mold cost: For small and medium batch production of custom-shaped target plates, vacuum forming mold costs are far lower than injection molding, making it ideal for customized shooting target products.
