Why ABS Sheet Is Ideal for Luggage Manufacturing
ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is one of the most widely used thermoplastics in the luggage industry, and for good reason:
Lightweight – Reduces overall baggage weight, helping travellers avoid excess fees and making handling easier.
High Impact Strength – Absorbs shock and resists cracking from drops and baggage handling impacts.
Excellent Formability – Can be easily thermoformed into complex, aerodynamic shell shapes with crisp edges and deep draws.
Superior Surface Aesthetics – Takes paint, printing, and textured finishes exceptionally well, allowing for glossy or matte designs and custom colours.
Cost-Effective – Offers a great balance between performance and price, making it the preferred choice for mid‑range to premium luggage.
Advantages and Disadvantages of ABS Sheet
| Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|---|
| • Good impact resistance and stiffness | • Lower UV resistance – prolonged sunlight may cause yellowing or surface degradation |
| • Lightweight (density ~1.04–1.06 g/cm³) | • Less scratch‑resistant than polycarbonate (PC) unless coated |
| • Easy to vacuum form with high precision | • Moderate chemical resistance – can be affected by strong solvents |
| • Wide range of colours and textures available | • Lower heat deflection temperature compared to PC (softens at ~85–95°C) |
| • Recyclable and can be reground for production | • Not as tough as pure PC in extreme cold conditions |
Manufacturing Process: Vacuum Forming
The production of luggage shells from ABS sheet typically follows the vacuum forming process:
- Sheet Heating – The ABS sheet (usually 1.5–3.5 mm thick) is clamped and heated in an oven until it becomes pliable and sagging.
- Mould Placement – A male or female mould, shaped like the final luggage half-shell, is positioned below the heated sheet.
- Vacuum Suction – A vacuum is applied through tiny holes in the mould, drawing the soft sheet tightly against the mould surface. Air is evacuated from between the sheet and the mould.
- Cooling – The formed part is cooled (often with fans or water mist) until it retains its new shape.
- Trimming & Finishing – Excess material is trimmed away, and holes for handles, locks, and wheels are punched or routed.

Our ABS Sheet – The PC/ABS Advantage
We produce high‑performance PC/ABS alloy sheets specifically formulated for luggage applications. By blending polycarbonate (PC) with ABS, we deliver a material that surpasses standard ABS in every critical aspect:
- Superior Impact Resistance – Our PC/ABS sheet offers up to 40% higher impact strength than conventional ABS, with excellent ductility even at low temperatures (–20°C). It withstands rough airline handling without cracking or splitting.
- Enhanced Heat Deflection – With a Vicat softening point of ~115°C (vs. ~95°C for standard ABS), our sheet resists warping in hot car trunks or under direct sunlight.
- Better Scratch Resistance – The PC phase improves surface hardness, reducing visible scuff marks during daily use.
- Improved UV Stability – Special UV stabilisers are incorporated, preventing yellowing and maintaining gloss over years of travel.
Two additional advantages of our PC/ABS sheet:
- Exceptional Surface Finish & Customisation – Our sheets are produced with a mirror‑smooth or fine‑textured surface that accepts high‑gloss coatings, metallic finishes, and even digital prints. We offer custom embossed textures (e.g., hairline, leather grain, or diamond patterns) to give your luggage a distinctive, premium look.
- Outstanding Dimensional Stability & Consistency – Through advanced extrusion control, our sheet maintains tight thickness tolerances (±0.05 mm) and minimal warpage. This ensures reliable vacuum forming with fewer rejects, faster cycle times, and perfect fitting of shell halves – critical for water‑tight closures and smooth zipper operation.
| Property | Our PC/ABS Sheet | Standard ABS Sheet |
