ABS Plastic Sheet Vs. Acrylic Sheet: performance comparison

Performance comparison of ABS plastic sheet and acrylic sheet

The essence of the competition between ABS and acrylic is the trade-off between "toughness vs. transparency". In industrial design, it is necessary to make a comprehensive decision based on mechanical load, environmental exposure, and aesthetic needs, and if necessary, break through the limitations of a single material through material compounding or process optimization.

Physical properties

ABS plastic sheet: has high strength and toughness, is not easy to break, and can withstand a certain degree of impact. The notched impact strength can reach 20-30 kJ/m² (far higher than acrylic), suitable for frequent impact scenes (such as the internal bracket of the car bumper). Its density is about 1.05-1.1g/cm³, and the texture is relatively hard, but slightly lighter than acrylic sheet.
Acrylic sheet: has good transparency, and the light transmittance can reach more than 92%, and it is known as "plastic crystal". Its density is 1.18-1.2g/cm³, the texture is brittle and easy to damage, but the surface hardness is high and the wear resistance is good. The notched impact strength is only 2-3 kJ/m², and the brittleness is significant, so direct impact should be avoided.

Processing performance

ABS plastic sheet: easy to process and can be processed by cutting, drilling, welding, hot bending and other methods. It has good thermoforming performance, can be quickly formed at a certain temperature, and is suitable for large-scale production.
Acrylic sheet: The processing performance is also relatively good, and it can be processed by cutting, engraving, bonding, etc. However, during the thermal processing, the temperature and time need to be strictly controlled, otherwise deformation, bubbles and other problems are prone to occur. Outdoor life 10-15 years (anti-UV formula can maintain transmittance attenuation <5%)

Heat resistance

ABS plastic sheet: The heat deformation temperature is generally around 90-110℃, and the long-term use temperature should not exceed 80℃. In high temperature environment, its performance may decline or even deform. It is easy to turn yellow and brittle after 6 months of outdoor exposure (anti-UV agent needs to be added to extend the life to 2-3 years)
Acrylic sheet: The heat resistance is relatively good, the heat deformation temperature is about 100-108℃, and it can withstand a high temperature of 120℃ in a short period of time. However, at high temperatures, its transparency may be affected to a certain extent.

Typical industry application scenarios

1. ABS plastic sheet

Automotive industry: In the automotive industry, ABS plastic sheet has shown excellent performance advantages and is widely used in the manufacture of multiple key components. Automobile ventilation ducts are also often made of ABS plastic sheets. The ventilation ducts will not break or loosen due to vibration, ensuring the stable circulation of air in the car.

Electronic appliances: Printer housings and vacuum cleaner components are typical applications of ABS plastic sheets in the field of electronic appliances. For printers, their housings need to have good insulation properties to ensure the safety of users, and they also need to be easy to process to meet the diverse design requirements.

2. Acrylic sheet

Commercial display: Luxury windows and neon signs are classic applications of acrylic sheets in the field of commercial display. Luxury windows need to create a high-end and exquisite display atmosphere to attract consumers' attention.

Architectural decoration: Underwater viewing windows and lighting domes are unique applications of acrylic sheets in the field of architectural decoration. Underwater viewing windows need to withstand huge water pressure and erosion from harsh water environments, while also maintaining good transparency so that visitors can clearly view the underwater landscape.

Cost and sustainability comparison

Raw material cost: The raw material cost of ABS sheets is relatively stable, usually between 20-50 yuan/kg. In contrast, the raw material cost of acrylic sheets is higher, generally between 30-80 yuan/kg. Especially for imported optical-grade acrylic sheets, the price is doubled due to its extremely high requirements for purity and optical properties and complex production processes.

Processing cost: The processing cost of ABS sheets is low, thanks to its good processing properties. In contrast, the processing cost of acrylic sheets is higher. According to statistics, in production projects of the same scale, the processing cost of acrylic sheets may be 30-50% higher than that of ABS sheets.

Recycling difficulty: ABS sheets are difficult to recycle. Since recycled abs sheet are usually mixed with many different types of plastics, stratification is prone to occur during the recycling process, resulting in a decrease in the performance of the recycled materials. Acrylic sheets can be recycled by crushing and remelting, but they will turn yellow after multiple recycling, affecting their optical properties and appearance quality.

Alternatives and complementary designs

Replacing ABS sheet:

PC/ABS alloy sheet: PC/ABS alloy sheet is an excellent alternative material that combines the impact resistance and temperature resistance of PC with the processing performance and cost advantages of ABS. In some application scenarios with high material performance requirements, PC/ABS alloy can better meet the needs. Compared with ABS plastic sheet, the impact resistance of PC/ABS alloy sheet can be improved by about 20-30%, and the temperature resistance is improved by about 10-20℃.

Replacing acrylic sheet:

PC sheet: Polycarbonate sheet has excellent impact resistance, and its impact strength is about 10 times higher than that of acrylic sheet. It is very suitable for some application scenarios with high safety performance requirements, such as riot shields. However, the light transmittance of Polycarbonate sheet is relatively low, only about 88%, which is lower than the high light transmittance of acrylic board.

Ultimate Selection Recommendation

Choose ABS sheet: Non-transparent parts with limited budget, impact resistance, and complex structure.

Choose Acrylic sheet: Displays or optical scenes with high transparency and weather resistance.

Mixed Use: In some cases where functional layered design is required, mixed use of ABS and acrylic boards can achieve the best effect. For example, when making some high-end furniture, acrylic composite ABS sheet can be used to achieve a scratch-resistant and smooth surface and impact-resistant internal effect. This design method gives full play to the advantages of the two materials, which not only ensures the functionality of the product, but also enhances its decorativeness and added value.
