Bus Interior ABS Panels

When we first started working with transit authorities and bus builders, we quickly realized that interior panels aren't just about aesthetics. They face daily abuse – passengers leaning against walls, luggage scraping ceilings, temperature swings from freezing mornings to scorching afternoons. Over the years, we've learned that the difference between a panel that lasts a decade and one that fails in two years often comes down to three things: material consistency, tooling accuracy, and a deep understanding of how the part actually behaves in service.

That's why we chose ABS as our core material, and why we've built our entire production process around controlling every variable – from the raw resin to the final trimmed part.

Our Production Process

From SolidWorks to Finished Panel

abs sheet extrusion

ABS Sheet Extrusion

We begin by extruding our own ABS sheets in‑house. Using state‑of‑the‑art extrusion lines, we produce flat, uniform sheets with tight thickness tolerances. This step is critical because any variation in the sheet directly affects the final formed part. We control melt temperature, screw speed, and cooling profiles to ensure consistent material properties across every batch.

solidworks design

Tooling Design Based on SolidWorks

Once we receive your 3D model (typically in SolidWorks), our engineering team translates your design into a production‑ready mold. We use the SolidWorks data to generate exact tool paths, account for material shrinkage, and design vacuum‑forming molds with proper draft angles, venting, and surface textures. Our CNC‑machined molds are crafted from aluminum or epoxy resins, balancing durability with cost‑effectiveness for both prototype and high‑volume runs.

vacuum forming

Vacuum Forming

The extruded ABS sheet is heated to its optimal forming temperature, then draped over the mold. A powerful vacuum draws the sheet tightly against the mold surface, capturing every detail-from ribbed reinforcements to decorative grain patterns. After cooling, the formed part is trimmed, routed, and finished to your exact dimensions. This thermoforming process allows us to create large, complex shapes with consistent wall thickness, all in a single, efficient operation.

Why ABS Panels Are the Ideal Choice for Bus Interiors

Bus interiors demand materials that can handle real

Outstanding Impact Resistance

ABS is inherently tough. It absorbs energy from bumps, kicks, and shifting luggage without cracking or shattering. Unlike brittle plastics, ABS panels bend slightly under impact and return to shape, reducing maintenance costs and downtime for fleet operators.

01

Superior Thermal Formability

The very same properties that make ABS easy to vacuum form also enable complex geometries-deep draws, undercuts, and sharp corners-without tearing or thinning excessively.

02

Lightweight Yet Rigid

Compared to metal or fiberglass, ABS offers an excellent strength‑to‑weight ratio, contributing to better fuel efficiency and easier handling during installation.

03

Aesthetic Versatility

ABS accepts a wide range of textures, colors, and coatings (including UV‑stable paints and anti‑graffiti films), so your interiors remain attractive and easy to clean over years of service.

The ABS Sheet Advantage – Low Shrinkage for Precision Fit

One of the most overlooked but crucial characteristics of ABS is its low and predictable shrinkage rate (typically 0.4–0.7%). For bus interior panels, where gaps, seam alignments, and fastener locations must be millimeter‑perfect, this is a game‑changer.

  • Tight Dimensional Tolerances – Low shrinkage means the finished part closely matches your SolidWorks model. We can achieve tolerances within ±0.5 mm on critical features, ensuring that panels fit flush against existing structures, reducing squeaks and rattles, and preserving the sleek, OEM‑quality look that transit authorities demand.
  • Consistency Across Batches – Because our extrusion process and forming parameters are tightly controlled, every panel from the same mold will be virtually identical. This repeatability saves time during installation and eliminates the need for on‑site trimming or shimming.
  • Reduced Warpage – Low shrinkage also minimizes internal stresses, so panels stay flat and stable even under temperature swings from –20°C to +80°C-common in buses parked outdoors or operating in varied climates.

Why Choose Us – Your One‑Stop Partner from Sheet to Finished Part

We don't just sell ABS panels; we provide a complete, integrated solution that simplifies your supply chain and elevates your final product.

Sheet‑to‑Forming One‑Stop Service – Many suppliers either extrude sheets or do vacuum forming, but not both. We do both under one roof. This eliminates the logistics of sourcing sheets from one vendor and forming from another. It also gives us full control over material quality, from the raw resin pellet to the trimmed panel. You get faster lead times, lower total cost, and single‑point accountability.

Expert Optimization Guidance – Our engineering team doesn't wait for problems-we proactively review your designs. We advise on draft angles, radii, undercuts, and rib placement to ensure your parts form flawlessly. We also simulate the thermoforming process digitally (using FEA) to predict thinning areas and adjust the sheet thickness accordingly, so you receive a part that meets both structural and aesthetic targets.

Tailored Sheet Material Recommendations – Not every bus interior requires the same ABS grade. We offer a portfolio of formulations:

  • High‑impact ABS for luggage racks and floor‑adjacent panels.
  • Flame‑retardant ABS (meeting FMVSS 302 and UL 94 V‑0) for ceiling and HVAC components.
  • UV‑stabilized ABS for window surrounds and skylight frames.
  • Textured/grained ABS that matches OEM surface finishes.
